Miraculous Rescue: Fisherman Found Alive After 15 Days in Underwater Cave
An extraordinary rescue in Mexico: Areste Cristano Valdez disappeared during a spearfishing trip. Rescuers, initially searching for a body, were stunned to find him alive deep within a cave system. He survived by drinking water from a stream and spending his time in prayer and sleep, losing all sense of time and believing he had been trapped for only three days.
Media outlets around the world are reporting on the extraordinary story of a fisherman who was rescued alive after spending more than two weeks trapped in an underwater cave. Cave diving specialists, initially called in to recover a body, were amazed to discover the fisherman sitting in the darkness within a large air pocket deep inside the cave, waiting to be rescued.
31-year-old Areste Cristano Valdez disappeared on July 23 while spearfishing in a cenote—a natural sinkhole—in San Francisco La Paz, Mexico. When he failed to surface, his father called for help. The search operation eventually included experts from Mexico, Germany, the USA, and the Dominican Republic.
Six days into the search, rescuers found Valdez’s spear gun at a depth of 65 meters. On August 6, experienced American cave diver Harry Gust discovered a spare air tank at a depth of 100 meters, which provided a crucial clue to Valdez's route. The following day, Gust located a large dry cave and, upon calling out, heard Valdez reply. He returned with assistance to bring the survivor to the surface.
Valdez was suffering from severe dehydration and malnutrition. Fortunately, a stream flowing through the cave provided him with water, which kept him alive. In an interview with the NMás network, he described the event as an "unbelievable miracle." He explained that he had become disoriented while chasing a fish and could not find his way back. He spent his time in prayer and sleep, losing all sense of time; when rescued, he believed he had been trapped for only three days, not 15.
Mexican researcher Carlos Jimenez, who participated in the search, noted that the rescue was particularly challenging due to poor visibility and sharp rocks that made laying a safety rope impossible. Valdez stated that he never lost hope of being rescued.
