Less than two weeks ago, Santos was still under a FIFA transfer ban due to a debt owed to Monaco. Today, the club boasts a squad featuring Neymar, Gabigol, Arthur Melo, Everton Cebolinha, and Philippe Coutinho. UOL described the turnaround as a shift from financial distress to a "Galácticos" model, centered around Neymar and his family's company, NR Sports.

The story began with Santos's debt to Monaco following the 2023 acquisition of Jean Lucas. The club was required to pay €2.032 million, and after failing to do so, was hit with a registration ban in July. At the end of August, NR Sports stepped in and transferred the full amount in cash to lift the restriction.

Advertising Rights and Debt Restructuring

This was not a donation. In return, NR Sports acquired rights to six different advertising spaces on Santos's kits, which it can utilize or sell to sponsors. During the match against Atlético Mineiro, three of these spaces already featured brands linked to the Neymar family, including NR Sports.

Ironically, Santos still owes the Neymar family a much larger sum. The club acknowledged a debt of approximately €15.4 million for image rights, paid about €1.9 million in July, and restructured the remaining €13.6 million into up to 80 monthly installments.

Building the Galácticos

Immediately after the ban was lifted, the transfer campaign began. Arthur Melo was among the first to arrive, with reports in Brazil indicating his signing was requested by Neymar and his father. Coutinho soon followed, joining on a short-term contract until the end of the season.

"The fact that Neymar had to become a manager, scout players, influence signings, and assist in paying off the transfer ban actually highlights the administrative disorder at Santos," commented UOL analyst Ubiratan Leal.

While fans celebrate the influx of star power, questions remain regarding whether Neymar has transitioned from a player into a de facto sporting director, exposing deeper structural issues within the club.
