The leader of the Balad party, Sami Abu Shehadeh, has decided to withdraw his candidacy for the upcoming Knesset elections following a recommendation by Supreme Court President Isaac Amit. Ahmad Tibi, chairman of Ta'al and an ally of Abu Shehadeh, criticized the left-wing Democrats party for supporting his disqualification.

Speaking in a radio interview, Tibi argued that the Democrats and their leader Yair Golan made a severe democratic mistake by joining forces with right-wing factions to block an Arab candidate.

"I think the Democrats and Yair Golan made a serious mistake, both democratically and by harming Sami's right to proper defense. It seems bizarre to me that the Democrats would join a petition by Otzma Yehudit and Ben Gvir to disqualify an Arab candidate," Tibi said.

The Impact on Judicial Perception

Tibi suggested that the left-wing party's stance may have influenced the Supreme Court justices, noting the delicate balance between conservative and liberal members on the bench. He claimed that the alignment of a traditional left-wing faction with the disqualification push created pressure that ultimately forced Abu Shehadeh's exit.

Political Fallout in Arab Society

The Ta'al leader noted that the decision caused immense debate within Arab society and within their political alliance. While some debated whether to await a formal court ruling or accept the judicial hint, Tibi emphasized that the alliance ultimately backed Abu Shehadeh's difficult choice as the lesser of two evils in a challenging political climate.
