Romania marked its National Holocaust Remembrance Day in Bucharest on October 9, featuring military honors, wreaths, and speeches addressing the country's historical responsibility. The annual commemoration, established in 2004, recalls the deportation of up to 180,000 Jews from Bukovina and Bessarabia to Transnistria during World War II.

The ceremony at the Holocaust Memorial brought together government officials, diplomats, and students. Dragoș Hotea of the Interministerial Committee on Combating Antisemitism openly acknowledged the crimes committed by Romanian authorities and the gendarmerie. The event was organized in cooperation with the Elie Wiesel National Institute for the Study of the Holocaust in Romania.

Representatives of the Roma community also participated, noting that approximately 25,000 Roma were deported alongside Jews, with many perishing. Speakers emphasized that while official recognition and educational programs have expanded, rising antisemitism in Europe continues to pose a significant challenge.

Ahead of the memorial day, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted a conference marking a decade since the adoption of the IHRA working definition of antisemitism, which was adopted in Bucharest in 2016. Participants discussed the ongoing gap between official governmental efforts and the growing hostility observed on European streets.
