Recently, the topic of wages has been making headlines. An analysis of data from the country's central cities shows that wage levels there exceed those in the periphery by 20–30% or more across a significant number of professions. This is good news for residents of Rishon LeZion, Rehovot, or Azor. However, there is a downside: the higher the average wage, the more pronounced the income gap between men and women becomes.

Behind the dry figure of the average wage in Israel, which stands at approximately 14,700 NIS gross in July 2026, lies a complex economic reality. The labor market is characterized by deep inequality influenced by four factors: occupation, gender, age, and geography. The high-tech sector remains the primary growth engine, with wages two to three times higher than the national average, despite the current crisis and the impact of artificial intelligence.

Wage levels by profession

Official data reveals the following average monthly gross salaries:

  1. High-tech executives: 40,000 – 45,000 NIS.

  2. Software engineers: 28,000 – 38,000 NIS.

  3. Engineering and construction project managers: 22,000 – 35,000 NIS.

  4. Economists and financial personnel: 18,000 – 22,000 NIS.

  5. Nursing and paramedical staff: 14,000 – 18,000 NIS.

  6. Teachers: 11,000 – 13,500 NIS.

  7. Social workers: 10,000 – 12,000 NIS.

  8. Customer service representatives: 9,000 – 11,000 NIS.

In the center of the country, salaries in these sectors tend toward the upper threshold, while in the periphery, lack of competition forces workers to accept lower pay, often approaching the bottom of the average range.

The gender gap

One of the most concerning factors is the wage gap between men and women. With an average male salary of about 17,300 NIS gross, women earn an average of 11,200 NIS. The main reasons include:

  • Working hours: Women are more likely to work part-time due to family responsibilities.

  • Professional segregation: Women are more concentrated in lower-paying fields like education and care.

  • The education paradox: Among academics, the gender pay gap reaches up to 36% in favor of men.

Age and geography

Wage dynamics by age follow a bell curve: from 8,500 NIS for the 20–29 age group to a peak during the 45–55 age range. After 55, a moderate decline occurs due to shifts to part-time work or difficulties adapting to new technologies.

Geography remains a decisive factor: according to the Bank of Israel, every 100 kilometers of distance from Gush Dan reduces household income by approximately 15%. The center hosts international company headquarters and financial institutions, while the periphery is dominated by the public sector, which naturally offers lower wages. Exceptions exist only in cases of severe shortages of specialized professionals, where peripheral wages can be competitive.
