Putin Discusses Strategic Ties With Iran as Moscow Eyes Mediation Role
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian security official Mohsen Rezaee discussed strategic ties as Moscow steps into mediation efforts between Tehran and Washington ahead of potential nuclear talks.

Russian President Vladimir Putin held a telephone conversation with Mohsen Rezaee, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, as reported by the Fars news agency. During the talks, Rezaee expressed appreciation for Moscow's stance alongside Tehran, and both sides reaffirmed their commitment to continued strategic cooperation. This diplomatic contact signals Moscow's potential entry into mediation efforts between Tehran and Washington, following a message delivered last week by US Vice President JD Vance containing a proposal to resume negotiations.
Qatari Mediation and US Stance
Behind the scenes, Qatari mediators have put forward a draft agreement currently being reviewed by both Iranian and US leaderships. The proposal outlines a limited agreement featuring mutual confidence-building steps and a three-day framework to resume nuclear talks. US President Donald Trump reportedly remains interested in exploring diplomatic avenues, despite pressure from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during their Saturday conversation to renew military action. While Trump has not ruled out returning to conflict, he currently favors testing diplomatic results.
Tehran Signals Flexibility Amid Conditions
Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has granted the government specific authorities to pursue an agreement with the United States through dialogue. However, significant gaps remain between the parties. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi noted that consultations with Qatari and Pakistani mediators have intensified, emphasizing that Tehran is fully prepared for both diplomacy and self-defense. Araghchi placed the responsibility on Washington to choose negotiations over military action and reiterated demands regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
