The death toll from a ferry fire that broke out off the coast of the Philippines last Wednesday has risen to 76, with 13 people still missing, authorities reported on Sunday. Rescue teams are continuing search operations near the coast of Palawan province as a criminal investigation was opened into safety failures that allowed the disaster to unfold.
The fire erupted aboard the ferry "John Ester" when it was approximately 39 kilometers from its destination in the city of Coron. A total of 132 passengers and crew members were on board when the vessel departed from the capital, Manila. Forty-three people survived the inferno and were evacuated to the port of Borak, where special tents were set up to receive dozens of body bags brought ashore by coast guard vessels.
The fire spread with such terrifying speed that there was no time to grab a life jacket, and passengers trampled over each other in a desperate bid to escape.
Investigation Focuses on Safety and Crew Actions
The investigation into the incident is currently focusing on crew accountability and locating the captain. Coast Guard spokesperson Naomi Quiaviab stated that authorities are searching for the vessel's commander, who reportedly survived the fire but is not listed on the official roster of survivors.
