Undercover passengers with body cameras: A new enforcement measure on Israeli buses
The Ministry of Transport is launching an enforcement program where undercover inspectors equipped with body cameras will document incidents on buses in real time to combat violence and bullying.
The fight against violence in public transport in Israel is intensifying. To eradicate the phenomenon of assaults, threats, and verbal abuse directed at drivers and passengers, the Ministry of Transport is launching a focused enforcement initiative that brings undercover surveillance methods directly onto buses.
As part of the program, inspectors from the National Public Transport Authority will board buses disguised as regular passengers, equipped with wearable body cameras. Their role is to document in real time any manifestation of verbal or physical violence, public disturbances, or bullying, and to transfer the footage directly to professional and law enforcement agencies.
Beyond combating bullying, these undercover passengers will also serve as a quality control mechanism. They will monitor compliance with schedules, accessibility, cleanliness, and the conduct of drivers toward the public. The move was formulated following a field tour conducted by the Ministry's Director General, Moshe Ben Zaken, together with the official in charge of the fight against violence in public transport, retired Major General Doron Turgeman, during which drivers expressed severe distress regarding their personal security.
"The ministry is determined to shift the center of gravity from meeting rooms to the field. Violence of any kind is a red line that will not be overlooked," the Director General emphasized.
The combination of undercover presence, wearable technology, and strict quality control may serve as a significant deterrent in public spaces. It remains to be seen whether this new initiative will succeed in restoring a sense of security, civility, and order to Israel's bus lines.
