English football club Oxford United apologized and pulled a new clothing line featuring 'United 93' after realizing the unintentional reference to the 9/11 hijacked airliner.
Oxford United, a lower-league English football club, has drawn intense backlash after releasing promotional images for a new clothing line featuring the inscription "United 93"—the exact designation of the hijacked airliner that crashed in Pennsylvania during the September 11 terrorist attacks.
The club intended the branding to celebrate its founding year of 1893. However, officials quickly realized the unfortunate parallel to United Airlines Flight 93, prompting an immediate withdrawal of the Campus Clothing collection and a formal public apology.
"This should never have reached the point of sale, and we take full responsibility for failing to conduct proper due diligence," the club stated. The tragic 2001 hijacking resulted in the deaths of all 44 people on board, with investigators believing the aircraft was intended to target the U.S. Capitol.
