A surreal scene in Austria has turned into a public scandal after a helicopter landed in the middle of a corporate party in the town of Micheldorf, Upper Austria, carrying a man who looked exactly like Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Accompanied by three masked, heavily armed Austrian police officers, the fake billionaire stepped out to the astonishment of guests.
Corporate Theater and Real Police
The officers belonged to SIG, a tactical rapid-intervention unit based in Linz, and reportedly knew they were escorting a professional impersonator. The stunt has sparked widespread outrage in the country because the SIG unit is trained strictly for high-risk tactical operations, not VIP security or corporate entertainment.
The lavish event was hosted by Austrian tool manufacturer Heidelmair to celebrate completing its largest order ever for Amazon. Guests enjoyed helicopter sightseeing tours, live music, a mechanical bull, and a roasted pig. The fake Bezos, a German electrician named Cagdas Halislar, arrived in grand style to match the extravagant atmosphere.
Investigation and Political Fallout
Questions immediately arose as to how an elite tactical police unit ended up guarding an impersonator at a private party. Reports indicate that Mario Heidelmair, a senior executive at the firm, personally approached Linz police commander Klaus Hubner, whom he has known for years.
The billionaire was completely fake, but his security detail was entirely real.
According to Heidelmair, Hubner initially viewed the request as unusual but later saw it as an opportunity to boost police recruitment and improve the agency's public image. The Austrian newspaper Der Standard reported that the participating officers may have even logged the assignment as overtime, including risk bonuses. The Federal Bureau for Anti-Corruption has been informed, and the Green Party has called for a parliamentary inquiry.
