OpenAI has reversed its planned subscription policy changes, announcing an immediate doubling of usage limits for all Pro and Business Premium subscribers following a severe backlash from developers and professionals.

The controversy began when OpenAI intended to slash usage quotas by approximately 50% for its $200 Pro subscription tier while keeping the price unchanged. The proposed reduction triggered widespread anger among software engineers and enterprise users who depend on the tools for daily coding and complex workflows, prompting threats of mass cancellations and migration to competing AI platforms.

Responding to the public criticism, company representative Tibo, known as a key communications lead for ChatGPT and Codex on X, issued an official statement retracting the cuts and announcing an expanded policy.

"We heard your feedback and will not reduce usage limits on Pro 200, so your usage on Work and Codex will remain unaffected," he stated. "Furthermore, starting today, we are doubling all usage limits across all Pro 100, 200, 500, and Business Premium plans at no additional cost."

Impact on Work and Codex Engines

The doubling applies directly to two primary engines sharing subscription quotas. Codex, the advanced code generator used by programmers for software development, testing, and complex execution, benefits alongside ChatGPT Work, the dedicated workspace environment designed for long-term tasks, heavy document processing, and advanced data analysis.

Subscribers paying between $100 and $500 monthly will now experience significantly expanded capacity. Developers who previously faced daily or weekly usage caps will enjoy twice the volume of queries, code executions, and analytical commands without incurring extra expenses.

Additionally, OpenAI clarified that expanded quotas for Dots—autonomous background AI agents—will remain in effect for now. The operations of these background agents will continue to be tracked separately, ensuring they do not consume the newly doubled quotas allocated for Work and Codex.

Immediate Rollout and Ongoing Transparency

The upgrades take effect immediately and are deployed automatically on the server side, requiring no manual action from users. While the immediate relief averts developer churn during a highly competitive market phase that recently saw the rollout of the GPT-6.1 Terra model with discounted API pricing, industry observers note that OpenAI still does not publish absolute numerical limits for token counts or hourly queries.
