The Jerusalem Magistrate's Court is set to deliver its verdict on Thursday regarding MK Ofer Cassif, who is charged with aggravated assault of a police officer. According to the indictment filed by the Jerusalem District Prosecutor's Office, the incident took place on May 13, 2022, during protests in the southern Hebron Hills following a Supreme Court ruling concerning the Masafer Yatta villages.

Incident Details and Confrontation

Security forces had declared the area a closed military zone, restricting the movement of vehicles and protesters. According to the charges, MK Cassif arrived at the scene and demanded to drive his vehicle through the barricade, despite orders from border police officers. An argument ensued, during which Cassif allegedly hurled insults at the officers.

The indictment states that Cassif then entered his vehicle and slowly drove forward, striking a police officer's leg. In response, the officer struck the hood of the car. Cassif subsequently opened the door and struck the officer on the side of the head with an open hand, causing pain to his head and leg.

Defense Arguments and Legal Representation

"MK Cassif denies the charges and maintains that his actions did not constitute an assault, but rather a reaction to police conduct," stated defense attorney Daniel Haklai.

Cassif is represented by attorney Daniel Haklai. Throughout the legal proceedings, the defense has contested the framing of the events, arguing that the Knesset member did not strike the officer's head, but merely pushed away the officer's hand during the heated altercation.
