The distance between the sounds of war on land and the tense silence of the sea is only a few kilometers, yet the combat reality of the Israel Navy operates in an entirely different dimension. In a special report, Liran Levy accompanies the fighters of the southern maritime arena, specifically the 916th Squadron, embarking on a Shaldag-class patrol boat to observe the forces protecting the coast 24/7.

Facing the Enemy at Close Range

Contrary to the common misconception that the navy operates solely in vast, distant waters, recent warfare has completely transformed its operational scope. Captain A., a patrol commander in the squadron, explains how naval vessels have become crucial for ground forces operating along the Philadelphi Corridor and the northern Gaza Strip.

"The moment you enter to assist the infantry and approach within a kilometer of the shoreline, you see the beach in broad daylight, and very often you spot the very terrorist approaching our forces. You completely feel the danger," he notes.

The Israeli Mosaic

One of the most striking aspects of life aboard the compact, 30-meter patrol boat—where 10 to 15 fighters live in tight quarters—is the diverse cross-section of Israeli society. New immigrants, kibbutz residents, urbanites, secular soldiers, observant men, yeshiva students, Druze, Muslims, and Christians serve side by side.

Jewish Tradition at Sea

A central question often raised concerns the observance of religious traditions at sea under intense operational pressure. The report highlights comprehensive halachic solutions provided by the Military Rabbinate, including specialized kosher shipboard kitchens featuring Sabbath modes for appliances, complete utensil separation, and innovative rulings allowing sailors to observe the Sabbath and holidays even during active combat missions.
