A routine stop for a soft drink turned into a life-changing moment for 54-year-old Michigan resident Michael Vander Lugt, who discovered a forgotten lottery ticket in his wallet was worth $1 million.

The extraordinary story was detailed in an official announcement by the Michigan Lottery. Back on August 8, Vander Lugt purchased a Powerball ticket at a store in the Michigan city of Wyoming. He went about his daily routine, completely unaware that five of the numbers he selected matched the winning combination.

Nearly two months later, Vander Lugt stopped at a local store to buy a carbonated beverage, only to realize at the checkout counter that he was short on cash. Instead of reaching for his credit card, he decided to pull out several old lottery tickets tucked away in his wallet, believing they might yield a few dollars, and asked the cashier to check them.

The cashier began scanning the slips until one of them triggered a special alert instructing the bearer to contact lottery headquarters. Vander Lugt returned to his car, checked the past drawing results online, and instantly realized what he had been carrying around for weeks.

«I recognized the numbers the moment I saw them and started going crazy», he recalled with excitement. «I still cannot believe I walked around with this ticket in my wallet for nearly two months without knowing it was worth a million dollars».

According to lottery officials, the winning ticket matched the five white balls drawn: 5, 9, 35, 54, and 63. Vander Lugt has already claimed his prize at the lottery headquarters and stated that he plans to pay off his mortgage and invest the remaining funds.
