New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani Faces Political Clash With Progressive Ally
A growing rift has developed between NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani and progressive congressional candidate Daria-Lisa Avila Chevalier over her harsh attacks on NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch.

A sharp political rift has emerged between New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Daria-Lisa Avila Chevalier, a progressive congressional candidate whom he endorsed during the primaries. According to reports, Mamdani's inner circle is furious with Chevalier following her aggressive calls to dismiss NYPD Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, whom the mayor chose to retain in her position.
The friction centers around an incident in the Bronx where U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents shot an undocumented immigrant suspected of gang affiliation during a vehicular escape attempt. The incident sparked intense anti-immigration enforcement protests, prompting Chevalier to join the demonstrators and launch a blistering attack against the city police department and its leadership.
In a lengthy social media statement, Chevalier claimed that the NYPD and Commissioner Tisch violated the spirit, if not the letter, of New York's sanctuary city policies. She accused the police of assisting the Trump administration in vilifying immigrant communities and demanded the immediate disbandment of the NYPD's Strategic Response Group (SRG), alongside Tisch's resignation.
However, local reports indicate that city police did not assist ICE agents during the arrest, and the SRG was not deployed to handle the protest. Despite these facts, Chevalier's public rhetoric has placed mounting political pressure on Mayor Mamdani, who previously pledged to dismantle the specialized unit during his campaign while continuing to back the police commissioner.
Sources within City Hall expressed profound frustration with Chevalier's conduct, describing her actions as a direct challenge to the mayor's authority. City officials are reportedly concerned that her agitation and street protests could provide the federal administration with a pretext to increase federal law enforcement presence in the city.
The controversy has also reverberated within the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), to which both Mamdani and Chevalier belong. National organizers and radical activists have joined the chorus demanding Tisch's removal, placing Mamdani in a complex political dilemma as he balances his ideological base with institutional stability.
