Revisiting the Pandemic on Screen

The past few years have been so difficult that we almost forgot what happened before—such as the 2020 global pandemic that turned life upside down. While time has passed, we also forgot the pandemic's impact on television and film, particularly "Covid movies" that dealt directly with the outbreak. If you thought this was a temporary genre of the past, the new drama Love of Your Life proves otherwise, placing the pandemic right at the heart of the story.

Directed by Rachel Morrison, Love of Your Life recently arrived in US theaters and on the streaming giant Amazon. The protagonist is Maya (Margaret Qualley), a young Boston nurse devoted to her hospital work. The plot begins when she meets Charlie (Gabriel Basso), a charming guy from whom she buys a used dresser. This meet-cute blossoms into a sweeping romance, leading to marriage, but then the twist arrives.

Grief, Guilt, and the Weight of Loss

The twist is the COVID-19 pandemic, forcing Maya to spend most of her time at the hospital. Concerned for his health, she asks Charlie to stay with his parents, but he insists on staying with her. Spoiler alert: Asthmatic Charlie contracts the virus and dies shortly after. A devastated Maya leaves everything behind to travel the world, seeking escape from a broken heart and survivor's guilt. Along the way, she confronts different aspects of grief and meets Felix (Aaron Pierre), testing the possibility of new love.

The most successful parts of the film are those dealing with the guilt that consumes the heroine, who feels partly responsible for her partner's death. The most compelling dynamic is not between Maya and her lovers, but between Maya and her mother-in-law Ruth, brilliantly played by Catherine Keener.

Performances and Verdict

While Margaret Qualley delivers a strong performance as the melancholic protagonist, the true star of the film is Catherine Keener, and her storyline alone is reason enough to watch. Love of Your Life is undeniably heavy, depressing, and laced with conventional tropes, yet it achieves moments of raw human emotion when it explores messy grief rather than idealized romance.
