Lithium Battery Dangers: Israel Faces Rising Surge of Deadly Fires
Lithium-ion battery fires are surging across Israel, claiming lives and prompting urgent warnings from fire authorities, as survivors advocate for strict safety regulations.

Lithium-ion batteries have become an integral part of modern life, powering everything from electric vehicles and scooters to smartphones and laptops. However, a routine habit like sleeping next to a charging phone can instantly turn into a deadly fire hazard. Roee Zuckerman, head of the hazardous materials branch at the Israel National Fire and Rescue Authority, warns that people fail to realize the severe danger posed by these power sources.
The Mechanics of Sudden Ignition
According to fire officials, a small internal battery failure can trigger an immediate blaze. These failures typically stem from mechanical damage, thermal stress caused by overheating, or short circuits resulting from uncertified chargers and faulty hardware. Once a battery exceeds its capacity, an uncontrolled thermal runaway begins. Flammable gases ignite rapidly, turning a household device into a severe safety threat.
Data from Fire and Rescue services reveals that lithium battery fires occur nearly once every 36 hours. In 2025 alone, roughly 256 such blazes were reported, resulting in four deaths and dozens of injuries, predominantly among children aged 10 to 13. Authorities strictly prohibit DIY battery modifications or charging micro-mobility devices inside residential spaces, noting that modern fires can engulf a room in just 15 seconds.
A Personal Tragedy and Public Advocacy
Shiron Alter understands the devastating toll of these accidents all too well. Two years ago, a modified lithium battery in a mobility scooter exploded in Tel Aviv, severely injuring her and tragically killing her 10-year-old son, Yotam. Following a year of grueling medical treatments and rehabilitation at Sheba Medical Center, Alter has dedicated her life to raising public awareness and advocating for stricter safety regulations.
"Our case is not ordinary. When people see how we escaped that fire in six seconds, they realize it is a miracle I survived," Alter shares. "Everyone walks around unaware that they are carrying ticking time bombs in their homes and pockets. We need strict legislation, bans on cheap second-hand batteries, and mandatory annual safety checks."
The Search for Safer Alternatives
Beyond personal devices, the transition toward renewable energy creates massive battery storage demands for the national power grid, amplifying safety concerns on an industrial scale. Prof. Brian Rosen, Chief Scientist at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, highlights the ongoing global race to develop safer alternatives, such as solid-state batteries for personal electronics and aqueous, water-based solutions for large energy storage facilities. The Ministry has invested heavily in electrochemistry research across Israeli academic institutions, hoping to bring breakthrough safety innovations from the laboratory to the commercial market within the next few years.
