Iran issues unusual threat to Syria: "We will strike more than 100 targets, including the presidential palace"
According to a report cited by the Tasnim agency, Tehran has conveyed firm messages to Damascus and regional countries in an attempt to prevent Syrian intervention in Lebanon against Hezbollah. The warning was conveyed via Turkey and included a threat that such a move would lead to a broad regional conflict on Syrian soil - and would include strikes on "strategic sites."
The Iranian news agency Tasnim cited today (Thursday) a report by the Lebanese media outlet "U-News," according to which Iran has conveyed direct and firm messages to Damascus and other capitals in the region, with the aim of thwarting a scenario of Syrian military intervention in Lebanon under American pressure.
According to the report, Tehran made it clear to Turkey, Iraq, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia that any Syrian move against Hezbollah would lead to a broad regional conflict that would be conducted on Syrian soil.
The warning, which was conveyed to Damascus via Turkey, included a threat that:
"The Iranian missile response will target more than 100 strategic sites in Syria, including the presidential palace."
Last January, the IDF warned that Iran is working together with other hostile elements to assassinate the new Syrian president, Ahmad al-Sharaa. The warning was issued against the backdrop of the opening of contacts between Israel and Syria and the tension in the regional arena, and it is based on security information according to which al-Sharaa is subject to real threats and is forced to invest efforts in protecting himself and stabilizing his regime.
This assessment comes against the backdrop of the opening of negotiations between Israel and Syria, and the security establishment emphasizes that the lessons of October 7 require insisting on an IDF presence on Syrian territory. According to the established position, the presence is defined as a "primary shield" for the communities along the Israeli-Syrian border line.
It has come to the attention of Walla that in recent months several discussions were held under the leadership of the Minister of Defense and with the participation of senior members of the security establishment, at the end of which it was decided that the establishment's position is that there should be no withdrawal from the Syrian territory and the Mount Hermon area. A senior security official in the IDF said that the senior military leadership backed the Minister of Defense's position on the matter.
