The launch of China's 'Chang'e-7' robotic space mission, designed to scan the moon's south pole in search of frozen water, will not take place in the planned launch window this year. This was stated in an official announcement by the China Manned Space Engineering Office, published by state media in the country.

The mission was expected to take off as early as tonight or tomorrow morning Beijing time. The exact reason for the delay is not immediately clear, but state media noted only that "the lunar probe does not meet the launch conditions," and that "the assessment was conducted according to the principle of caution, reliability, and absolute mission success."

The USA and China are in a frantic race to build settlements at the moon's south pole, an area where it is believed that abundant frozen water reserves exist within shadowed craters. This resource is considered highly valuable for deep space exploration and a potential lunar base, as it can be converted into breathable air, drinking water, and even rocket fuel.

So far, no mission has directly analyzed water on the moon, as 'Chang'e-7' will attempt to do. The USA, while it has identified and begun to estimate the size of frozen water reserves using remote sensors on satellites in orbit, has never successfully sent a probe to drill for the resource.

Intuitive Machines from Texas sent a drill to search for water on the moon in 2025, but the spacecraft crashed while attempting to land on the notoriously treacherous terrain of the south pole and failed to complete the mission's objectives. The delay of the 'Chang'e-7' launch may return the space race — as American officials call the confrontation with China — to a competitive starting point.

The USA has several spacecraft intended for the same lunar region that 'Chang'e-7' is targeting, within the coming year. Astrobotic Technology from Pittsburgh may launch its 'Griffin' lander to the moon's south pole as early as the end of 2026. In addition, Jeff Bezos' space venture, 'Blue Origin', has plans to send up to two robotic landers to the moon next year, one of which may include the VIPER rover, a search robot specifically designed by NASA to hunt for frozen water and other lunar resources.

The belief that the moon's south pole contains vast frozen water reserves is the central reason why this region has become the main stage for international competition. Yuqi Qian, a lunar geologist at the University of Hong Kong, told CNN that 'Chang'e-7' could lead to "important progress on this question, and refine and focus experiments for further research and testing." Qian added that the Chinese lunar program is "moving from an exploration program to a resource utilization program."
