Deadly hours on the roads: The grim picture of night accidents involving Israeli youth
Data from the 'Or Yarok' association and the Central Bureau of Statistics reveal a grim picture of night accidents in Israel: a surge in youth casualties, a decade-high on urban roads, and the prominent cities where the most casualties were recorded.
A worrying reality on Israel's roads: the late night hours are becoming a death trap for young drivers and partygoers. New data from the 'Or Yarok' association, based on Central Bureau of Statistics figures, reveals a grim picture and points to an unusual surge in youth casualties in road accidents, which sets a bright warning sign for enforcement and education authorities.
According to the data, in the past year, 32 young people aged 15-24 were killed in road accidents during night hours (22:00-04:00) — an increase of 19% compared to 27 in the previous year. In total, 710 young people were injured at night, 159 of whom were seriously injured. On urban roads, a decade-high was recorded with 12 fatalities. At the top of the list of affected cities is Haifa with 34 casualties, followed by Tel Aviv-Yafo with 33 casualties and two fatalities, and Jerusalem with 25 casualties.
Lack of experience, fatigue, driving old vehicles, and the absence of safety systems are marked as the main factors for the carnage. 'Or Yarok' CEO, Adv. Yaniv Yaakov, calls for a combined response:
"The more resources we invest already in school, the more we will reap the rewards when they are adults. At the same time, enforcement and presence in the vicinity of entertainment centers must be increased, especially on weekends."
The sharp rise in the number of young people injured at night requires immediate emergency measures. Increasing police enforcement at entertainment hubs alongside safety education is the key to preventing the next tragedy.
