King of Norway Harald V passed away today, Friday, at the age of 89. The royal house had previously reported his hospitalization in Oslo in critical condition due to severe hemolytic anemia. The King had been receiving medical care since August 17, following a bacterial blood infection, but his health had significantly deteriorated in recent days. In light of his condition, Crown Prince Haakon and Queen Sonja had previously announced the cancellation of all scheduled events.

Harald V led the kingdom for decades, having ascended the throne in 1991. Throughout his reign, he was identified with stability and continuity, alongside a commitment to his public role and state institutions. He was considered a highly popular figure among the Norwegian public, known for his modest, statesmanlike, and unifying approach.

In 2024, the King announced that due to his advanced age and health, he would reduce the scope of his official duties. However, he firmly stated at the time that he had no intention of abdicating. He emphasized that the oath he took upon ascending to the throne bound him for life—a statement that illustrated his view of his role and the personal commitment he felt toward the kingdom.

Beyond his ceremonial duties, Harald was perceived as a leader who sought to maintain a close connection with the country's citizens, presenting the monarchy as an accessible and human institution. Throughout his years of rule, while the public was occasionally exposed to personal and family matters within the royal house, he remained careful to maintain the dignity and continuity of the monarchy.

The death of Harald V marks the end of a long era for the Kingdom of Norway. Throughout his years of service, the King became a figure synonymous with the nation's monarchical institution, maintaining a steady and statesmanlike course even as his health declined.
