The Ministry of Health reported the discovery of a jackal infected with rabies in the settlement of Kfar Giladi in the Upper Galilee. Following the diagnosis, four people who were exposed to the jackal have already been referred for preventive medical treatment. The official notification regarding the infected animal was received by the health system at the end of August.

The Ministry of Health is urgently appealing to anyone who had contact — or whose animals had contact in the area of the incident — with the infected animal or with stray animals between August 15 and August 30, 2026.

The public is called upon to contact the health bureau in Safed urgently at 04-6994257 or 04-6994200, or the health bureau closest to their place of residence. After business hours and during the weekend, one should go to a hospital emergency room.

In addition, the Ministry of Health asks parents of children in the area to check with them immediately if they have come into contact with suspicious animals. Pet owners are required to contact the municipal veterinarian to verify the validity of their vaccinations, and to pass this report on to travelers and vacationers in the surrounding settlements.

The ministry clarifies the guidelines and reminds that any person who has been bitten or scratched by an animal is required to immediately wash the affected area with running water and soap, disinfect the place with antiseptics, and go without delay to the health bureau to check the need for preventive treatment.
