Seattle Police Watchdog Reviews New Claims in 1994 Kurt Cobain Death Investigation
Seattle's police watchdog is reviewing claims that the former police chief acknowledged contradictions in forensic evidence regarding Kurt Cobain's 1994 death.
The Office of Police Accountability (OPA) in Seattle is reviewing allegations regarding former Police Chief Sean Barnes and the 1994 death of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain. The inquiry follows claims that Barnes admitted during a meeting last year with private investigators that forensic evidence collected at the scene appeared to contradict the original police report.
The review focuses strictly on police conduct and does not signal a reopening of the 1994 death investigation, as the Seattle Police Department maintains its official ruling of suicide. According to the volunteer group 'Who Killed Kurt?', Barnes allegedly addressed discrepancies regarding the lack of blood on the hand Cobain was supposed to have used to hold the shotgun.
The Forensic Dispute and Investigation
During a November meeting at police headquarters, volunteer investigators presented a peer-reviewed study arguing that Cobain was murdered. Group representatives Mark Larson and Michelle Wilkins met with Barnes to push for a comprehensive review of the ballistic and forensic findings. In response to concerns about the rapid suicide determination, Barnes noted that formal conclusions follow thorough investigations.
A determination comes after an investigation. Although I was not here at the time, as a trained investigator we investigate every death as though it were a murder, and only then reach a determination.
Cobain was found dead at his Seattle estate in April 1994 at the age of 27. In January, the Seattle Police Department reaffirmed its stance that it would not reopen the case, upholding the findings of a 2014 review. Barnes resigned from his position in July following criticism over unrelated operational matters.
Next Steps and Public Scrutiny
Private investigators argue that the Seattle Police Department failed to properly examine new scientific evidence submitted in late 2024. While the OPA evaluation continues, representatives emphasized that their goal is to ensure rigorous examination rather than immediate reclassification.
