Knesset to Discuss Adding 'Abducted' Inscription to IDF Memorial Headstones
The Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee is expected to discuss new regulations allowing families of fallen soldiers abducted on October 7 and later returned for burial in Israel to add the word "Abducted" and the date of abduction to their headstones.
This initiative follows requests from bereaved families, led by Ruby Chen, father of the late Staff Sergeant Itai Chen, urging that headstones reflect the extraordinary circumstances of their loved ones. The proposal was reviewed by the Public Council for Soldier Commemoration, which recommended the adjustment while preserving uniformity in military cemeteries. The measure was coordinated with the IDF, the Families and Commemoration Department, and the legal advisor to the defense establishment.
"The commemoration system is adapting once again to a reality that did not exist when the original regulations were drafted." — Defense Officials
If approved by the committee, the defense establishment plans to immediately replace the headstone pillows for 20 fallen soldiers and three civilian graves. Officials aim to complete the process ahead of October 7, rendering the upcoming committee discussions a matter of urgency.
