The upcoming 26th Knesset elections will conclude as polling stations close, initiating the complex legislative and constitutional process of forming a new government. While election results will identify the largest factions, they do not automatically determine who will secure the premiership, as coalition negotiations can span weeks or even lead to political deadlock.

Vote Counting and Official Results

Vote counting commences immediately after polls close, with continuous updates flowing to the Central Elections Committee. The final picture is expected to crystallize days later, though the committee is legally permitted to publish official results up to a week after the election. Until the official publication, the distribution of mandates remains subject to potential adjustments.

President's Consultations and Mandate

Following the publication of official results, President Isaac Herzog will convene consultations with representatives of the elected factions. The law dictates that the president must assign the task of forming a government within seven days of publishing the final results. Each faction presents its recommendation, which is calculated based on the number of MKs supporting a candidate rather than total popular votes.

Coalition Building Phases

The candidate tasked with forming a government receives an initial 28 days to conduct coalition negotiations and present a cabinet that can win a vote of confidence in the parliament. If this attempt fails, the president may grant an extension of up to 14 days. Should the first candidate fail, the mandate can be transferred to a second candidate for a strict 28-day period without extensions.

Knesset Swearing-In and Government Formation

The swearing-in ceremony for the 26th Knesset is scheduled for two weeks following the election, independent of whether a new coalition has been formed. Meanwhile, the new government itself lacks a fixed swearing-in date, as its establishment entirely depends on the successful conclusion of coalition talks and winning a parliamentary vote of confidence.
