The 8 Emtsa Mall sits right in the center of Kiryat Shmona, but since the outbreak of the Iron Swords war, this location has taken on an entirely different meaning. Once a central commercial hub, the mall has become a barometer for the city's overall condition.

Before the war, the city was home to 24,418 residents. In the days following October 7, about 10,000 residents evacuated independently, and the entire city was later evacuated by government decision. As of August 2026, population registries still indicate a city about 4.5% smaller than its pre-war size.

The damage extended far beyond population flight. By late November 2024, 382 buildings had been damaged in Kiryat Shmona—more than any other northern locality—with 73 suffering moderate to heavy damage. By 2026, about 40% of local businesses had still not reopened.

The 8 Emtsa Mall itself took three direct hits. Its roughly 75 shops and offices closed almost entirely, leaving only a bank branch operational for a long period. In November 2025, the mall began its gradual reopening, reflecting a city trying to figure out how much of its former life can truly return.
