Thousands of visitors who traveled to Jerusalem for Yom Kippur faced severe transportation bottlenecks on Saturday night as they tried to return home. Because Israel Railways does not operate services on the holiday's conclusion, travelers were forced to rely exclusively on intercity bus lines, leading to severe overcrowding and delays at the central bus station.
Overcrowded Buses and Strain on Travelers
The surge in passenger volume caused massive queues, with many travelers unable to board packed buses and forced to wait for subsequent vehicles. Passengers reported that crowds were so dense that people had to stand for the entire journey from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv and other destinations.
"I had to wait for a bus to Tel Aviv for nearly an hour after failing to board two packed services," one passenger told reporters. "Even when I finally got on around 11 PM, the conditions were terrible, and people boarding at subsequent stops had to squeeze in standing all the way."
The Operational Challenge and Public Demand
While Israel Railways routinely suspends operations during Yom Kippur and resumes service only the following morning—unlike the modified schedules maintained after regular Sabbath closures—passengers are increasingly questioning this policy. Resuming rail service requires extensive safety checks, including inspecting tracks in daylight, mobilizing operational crews, and preparing trainsets, a process that takes several hours.
Travelers and municipal stakeholders argue that given Jerusalem's unique status as a major focal point for holidays, special efforts should be made to restore train services on Yom Kippur night to boost the local economy and ease congestion.
Official Response from Israel Railways
In response to the public outcry, Israel Railways issued a statement explaining the constraints:
"As every year, train service on the conclusion of Yom Kippur resumed at approximately midnight due to numerous operational constraints and safety protocols unique to railways. Operating safe and precise train traffic requires extensive procedures, including track clearance, technical checks, and crew mobilization. Information regarding the holiday schedule was published well in advance."
