Jerusalem Court Sentences Man to 18 Years in Prison for Murder Over Parking Spot
The Jerusalem District Court sentenced Muhammad Youssef Shehadeh to 18 years in prison for murdering his cousin during a parking dispute in Anata.
The Jerusalem District Court sentenced Muhammad Youssef Shehadeh to 18 years in prison for the murder of his 22-year-old cousin, Mustafa, following a family dispute over a parking space in the neighborhood of Anata in Jerusalem.
Conviction and Details of the Incident
Under a plea bargain, Shehadeh was convicted of murder and of causing serious injury under aggravating circumstances to Mustafa's brother. According to the amended indictment, the violent altercation broke out in August 2023 over a parking space near their homes. During the dispute, Shehadeh stabbed his cousin at least 14 times in various parts of his body until he collapsed and died. When the victim's brother attempted to intervene and help, Shehadeh stabbed him as well, inflicting severe injuries that required emergency surgical intervention.
During the sentencing hearings, the Jerusalem District Prosecutor's Office emphasized the severity of the acts, noting that Shehadeh had multiple opportunities to halt the escalation but chose to continue the violence. Prosecutors pointed out the multiplicity of stab wounds to vital areas, the severe injury inflicted on the brother, and the fact that the defendant showed limited remorse. The state had requested a 25-year prison sentence, highlighting the deep and lasting grief inflicted on the family of the young man, who had volunteered for MADA (Magen David Adom) and performed national service.
"A young man with a bright future had his life cut short in an instant," prosecutors stated during the proceedings.
Court Ruling and Legal Statements
The court ruled that Shehadeh initiated the physical violence and that the repeated stabbing demonstrated exceptional brutality and thuggery. The judges firmly rejected claims of self-defense. Legal proceedings for other participants, who were minors at the time of the incident, were handled separately.
Advocate Benny Libeskind from the Jerusalem District Prosecutor's Office stated:
"This is a very severe incident. A family dispute over a parking space ended in murder. The defendant repeatedly stabbed his cousin until he collapsed and died, and also injured his brother. We cannot ignore the gravity of these actions and their tragic outcome."
Advocate Oumair Marid, representing the victim's family through the Ministry of Justice Legal Aid, added that the family felt a certain sense of relief with the sentencing, remembering the victim as a dedicated young man who contributed significantly to society.
