Jannik Sinner has already accepted the possibility of losing the world number one ranking following a right knee injury that forced him to end his 2026 season prematurely. Filippo Volandri, captain of the Italian Davis Cup team, revealed on Monday that he spoke with the 25-year-old tennis star, who made it clear that returning to full fitness is more important to him than the battle for the top spot.

"We spoke. Jannik is not looking at the number one spot, but rather at his health and improvement, that is what he told me and that is why I am calm," Volandri said during the Italian National Olympic Committee honors ceremony. "He made the right decision and he is a perfectionist. We will need patience, but he is working to return to the highest level. We are confident that is what will happen."

Sinner's Remarkable Season Cut Short

Sinner, who announced he will not return to the courts before 2027, recorded an exceptional season that was cut short by the injury. The Italian won 44 matches and lost only three, capturing six titles along the way: Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Madrid, Rome, and Wimbledon. His final appearance was at the Wimbledon final, where he defeated Alexander Zverev, who is now expected to surpass him in the world rankings by the end of the year.

Sinner's absence will also impact the Italian national team, which will attempt to defend its Davis Cup title without its biggest star. The Italians won the tournament three consecutive times between 2023 and 2025, following their first title in 1976. This time, they will be forced to compete without Sinner, who was a central figure in their streak of successes.

Davis Cup Preparations Without the Star

Volandri also addressed the preparations for the Davis Cup Finals tournament, which will be held in Bologna from November 24 to 29: "We are still far, but not that far. There are some factors that still need to develop. Whoever meets the three criteria of professional, physical, and mental reliability will be called up. The players know they must give their maximum."

Meanwhile, Sinner is focusing on knee rehabilitation and preparations for the 2027 season. After a year in which he won six titles and lost only three matches, the Italian will be forced to watch the battle for the top spot from the sidelines, hoping to return to the courts fully fit.
