After a long summer of ongoing negotiations between Jalen Duren and the Detroit Pistons, it appears that a major obstacle to an agreement has been removed. According to a report by The Athletic, a weight clause initially included in Detroit's five-year, $200 million offer is no longer on the table. The clause was never formally written into the contract, and the Pistons' offer is now fully guaranteed without any conditions related to Duren's weight.
Contract Options and Deadline
The 22-year-old center is theoretically eligible for a five-year max contract worth $287 million. So far, he has not accepted Detroit's $200 million offer, and he has until Thursday at 11:59 PM Eastern Time to decide whether to accept it or opt for a one-year qualifying offer worth $9.6 million. If Duren chooses the one-year option, he will become an unrestricted free agent next summer.

Trade Rumors and Future Outlook
Theoretically, if he manages to secure a four-year max contract with another team then, he could earn slightly more over the next five years compared to accepting Detroit's current offer. However, this is a very unusual decision for a player of his status and carries significant risk. According to the report, the mere discussion surrounding Duren's weight was not well received by him or his representatives, so the decision to drop the clause may improve the negotiating atmosphere.
Meanwhile, Detroit continues to refuse to enter serious sign-and-trade talks with other teams for now. Sacramento and Milwaukee are among the teams keenly interested in Duren, and Washington has also been mentioned as potentially interested in a trade involving Anthony Davis, but currently, the Pistons show no interest in these scenarios.
