One of the most bizarre scenarios in international football in recent years unfolded on Tuesday at the Gulf Cup, when Oman national team player Musab Al-Shaqsi thought he was celebrating the goal that sent his team to the semi-finals, only to almost become the man who eliminated them from the tournament.
Al-Shaqsi scored in the 84th minute to make it 1:3 for Oman against Kuwait. The victory tied Oman's record with Iraq at four points, with both goal difference and total goals scored being identical for the two squads.
At that stage, Oman still held the advantage in the next tiebreaker - the fair play ranking. The Omanis had seven yellow cards compared to Iraq's eight, but Al-Shaqsi removed his shirt during the goal celebrations and received a yellow card.
That caution changed everything. Oman also reached eight yellow cards, leaving both teams tied in the final disciplinary criterion as well. Since no other sporting metric remained to separate them, the decision came down to a draw.
Representatives of the Gulf Cup Competitions Committee, alongside delegates from Oman and Iraq, gathered at the InterContinental Hotel in Jeddah. After reviewing the official referee reports and confirming that both teams were indeed tied in card counts, the draw was held.
To Al-Shaqsi's great relief, Oman's name was drawn, securing their ticket to the semi-finals. Had he not removed his shirt after the goal, his team would have advanced directly via the fair play ranking, sparing themselves a dramatic ordeal that nearly ended in an unthinkable elimination.
