Chery is launching its youngest brand in Israel, starting with the stylish L8 SUV based on the familiar Tiggo 8. We put it to the test to see how it measures up.
First Impressions of the Jaecoo L8
The Chinese automotive giant Chery is expanding its local presence by introducing its fourth brand, Jaecoo. Positioned slightly above the parent brand, the Jaecoo L8 is a substantial SUV marketed in China as the second generation of the highly popular Tiggo 8. In Israel, it will be offered with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain, sold alongside its platform sibling.
The name Jaecoo is derived from a combination of 'leopard' (LE) and 'passion' (PAS).
Design and Cabin
The exterior design is smoother and more professional than previous Chery models, avoiding overly aggressive styling. Notable features include hidden door handles and a sleek rear light bar. Inside, the cabin is dominated by a 13.2-inch vertical touchscreen, though the manufacturer has wisely retained physical switches for climate control.
Material quality is above the current market standard. While our test units featured black interiors, the Israeli market will receive lighter upholstery options, which are better suited for the hot climate. Thanks to a 280 cm wheelbase, rear-seat passengers enjoy ample legroom, aided by a flat floor design.
Performance and Handling
The L8 utilizes a familiar PHEV powertrain: a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine (143 hp) paired with an electric motor (204 hp). With a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 7.9 seconds, the vehicle feels sufficiently quick for daily use. The 18.4 kWh battery provides a theoretical electric-only range of 90 km.
A key differentiator for the L8 is its European-tuned suspension. It offers better body control and reduces the excessive softness often found in other Chery models. The use of Continental EcoContact 7 tires enhances grip, while double-pane front windows and an active noise-cancellation system contribute to a quiet cabin environment.
Verdict
The Jaecoo L8 showcases the rapid learning curve of Chinese manufacturers in adapting to European and Israeli preferences. It is a more refined and capable vehicle than its predecessors. However, its market success will hinge on its pricing strategy, especially given the competition from the more affordable, seven-seat Tiggo 8.
