New Israeli Government Faces Wave of Senior Public Appointments
The new Israeli government and the 26th Knesset face a wave of senior public appointments, including a State Comptroller, agency directors, and board members, after months of freezes.

Following the recent elections and the formation of the new government and the 26th Knesset, numerous key public positions that were previously frozen are now awaiting immediate appointments. In recent months, ministers had been urged by Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara to exercise restraint regarding appointments, leaving several senior and political positions vacant.
State Comptroller and Key Leadership Roles
The 26th Knesset will be tasked with electing a new State Comptroller. The newly appointed Speaker of the Knesset will need to decide whether to restart the selection process or proceed with the previous candidates, Michael Raviv-Lo and former Supreme Court Justice Yosef Elron. A restarted process would mean a final decision might only be reached by December 2026, which currently leaves dozens of whistleblower protection requests on hold, as only the State Comptroller has the authority to sign such protective orders.
Additional Vacancies Across State Agencies
Other prominent positions awaiting permanent appointments include the Director-General of the Central Elections Committee, a post currently held on an interim basis by Adv. Dean Livne following the resignation of long-serving director Orly Ades. Furthermore, the position of Director-General of the National Insurance Institute has lacked a permanent appointment since November 2024, requiring the incoming Minister of Labor to establish a new search committee.
Meanwhile, the permanent management of the Israel Land Authority remains vacant, with Yehuda Eliyahu currently serving as acting director after a previous appointment was overturned by the High Court of Justice. Additional vacancies include the director of the Government Press Office, following Nitzan Chen's retirement, as well as positions within the Council for Higher Education.
