The Israel men's national handball team begins its European Championship qualifiers tonight at 19:00, facing an away match against the Czech Republic in Zlin. This opening fixture marks the first step in a demanding window that will also see Israel play away against Slovenia on Saturday night, following an agreement by the Israel Handball Association to swap home fixtures with the Slovenians.

Campaign Goals and Format

Israel's ultimate objective is to secure qualification for the European Championship for the first time since 2002. To achieve this milestone, the team must finish in one of the top two spots in a group that also features Bosnia and Herzegovina, or claim third place as one of the four best third-placed teams across the eight qualifying groups. Notably, results against the fourth-placed team do not count in the ranking of third-placed sides, making every single point and goal vital.

Squad Composition and Preparation

The Israeli delegation arrived in Zlin two days ago, where they integrated overseas legionnaires Yoav Lumbroso, Yahav Shamir, Yonatan Dayan, Tal Peled, and Daniel Mosindi, alongside Tomer Resh Arman, who plays professionally in the Czech Republic. Spanish head coach David Pisonero and assistant coach Chen Pomeranz, who works in Germany, lead the technical staff. The association hopes to replicate the success of the youth and junior national teams from last summer, both of which qualified for the World Championships, while introducing young talent like Loic Akc, who earned his first senior call-up.

Tough Openers Ahead

The Czech Republic finished the last European Championship in 17th place, while Slovenia placed eighth, setting up a challenging week for the visitors. The arena in Zlin, holding approximately 2,000 seats, is expected to be packed to capacity.

Head coach David Pisonero shared his outlook ahead of the clash:

«Our guys are full of enthusiasm and a desire to achieve something big, continuing the progress we started in the previous campaign. We believe this momentum will lead us to our goal of reaching the European Championship. Both away games will be exceptionally tough, and the Czech Republic is a very dangerous opponent, but we aim to start strong and trust our path.»

Player Daniel Mosindi added:

«We are facing a very strong Czech team, but we come with the mindset to win. We are a tight-knit squad that has played together for a long time under David and Chen. We have a good chance of winning our games this week if we stick to our tactical system and believe in ourselves.»
