Iran Analyst Warns of Regional Escalation as Israel Issues Stern Warning
Iranian analyst Trita Parsi argues that the collapse of US-Iran understandings highlights the need for a regional ceasefire, amid Houthi advances and a warning from Israel Katz.
Regional Escalation and Threats to Energy Infrastructure
Against the backdrop of Houthi advances toward the Bab al-Mandab Strait and escalating tensions between Iran and the United States, Iranian analyst Trita Parsi addressed the volatile security situation in the Middle East on Friday. He claimed that the collapse of the memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States illustrates why Tehran insisted on including a demand for a comprehensive regional ceasefire.
In a post on X, Parsi wrote that as part of the memorandum, Iran demanded a "full regional ceasefire" to prevent escalation not only on the Iranian front, but also in Lebanon, Israel, and Yemen. According to him, the United States agreed to the demand and even committed to pressuring Israel to comply.
"Now we see how critical this demand was and how much it served the interest of the United States," Parsi wrote.
Houthi Advance and Damage to Saudi Pipeline
Recent regional developments indicate the simultaneous expansion of conflict into multiple fronts. Parsi stated that Lebanon is currently facing an intense confrontation, while fighting in the Persian Gulf has "almost become normal."
He further claimed that the Houthis have made significant progress and are now capable of easily closing the Bab al-Mandab Strait. Additionally, a Saudi oil pipeline serving as an alternative route bypassing the Strait of Hormuz was damaged, heightening the risk of further violence.
According to US officials, the "East-West" Saudi pipeline—a vital route for transporting crude oil from the country's eastern fields to the Yanbu port on the Red Sea—was struck by projectiles on Thursday. The impacts occurred at pumping stations along the pipeline, causing fires.
Israeli Warning to Tehran
Meanwhile, Israeli Defense Minister Исраэль Кац issued a sharp warning to the Iranian leadership alongside a New Year greeting to the Jewish community in Iran and the Iranian people.
"Any attack on Israel from any reason and in any place will be met with a powerful response—hitting Iran with severe blows it has not yet suffered to this day, including its central energy facilities," the message stated.
