An unusual controversy has recently gripped Iranian football as national team goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand attempts to delay his mandatory military service. The 34-year-old Tractor SC star, who has earned 89 caps for Iran, is reportedly exploring various avenues to avoid conscription, including seeking a medical exemption by citing a tattoo on his arm.
Conscription Rules and Military Clubs
Unlike professional athletes in many other countries, Iranian players facing military service can sometimes serve within sports clubs affiliated with the armed forces. Authorities have made it clear that Beiranvand must report for duty, with officials intending to assign him to Fajr Sepasi, a club sponsored by the Basij paramilitary force. Iranian police commander Ahmad Reza Radan recently stated that the veteran goalkeeper must fulfill his duty, emphasizing that military service is mandatory for all citizens without exception.
"Military service is for everyone and it is impossible to exempt anyone," stated police commander Ahmad Reza Radan regarding the player's status.
