Instagram Admits Algorithm Bug Caused Creed Song "Higher" to Go Viral
Instagram admitted a technical bug caused Creed's 1999 song "Higher" to be over-recommended in user stories, sparking viral confusion and false paid promotion rumors.
Instagram has admitted to a technical glitch that caused the 1999 rock song "Higher" by Creed to be excessively recommended to users as a soundtrack for their stories, regardless of the visual content.
Users across the platform noticed the track appearing universally—accompanying everything from fresh salads and dogs in fields to sunset lake views. The massive viral saturation sparked online conspiracy theories, with users suspecting that Creed or its label had paid Meta for heavy promotional placement.
However, Instagram confirmed that no paid promotion or intentional deal took place. A company spokesperson admitted that the algorithm mistakenly pushed the track to far more accounts than intended, noting that the engineering team is actively working on a fix to resolve the issue.
While the algorithm is normally designed to suggest audio tracks based on a user's previous listening habits and the actual contents of the photo or video, this specific bug bypassed standard relevance filters. Instagram noted that other viral tracks, such as Soulja Boy's "Turn My Swag On," are simply popular organically without any underlying technical errors.
