The relationship between co-founders is one of the most critical factors determining the success of a startup. According to Daniela Amodei, president and co-founder of Anthropic, choosing the right partners can make or break a company. Speaking at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, she shared a unique test for evaluating potential co-founders before launching a venture together.

"Instead of starting a company together, go on a vacation together," Amodei advised. "Share a room with them and see how it goes. If after that all you want is to spend more time with them, then everything is great. But if you feel like you need another vacation just to recover from this one, then it's probably the wrong choice."

Building Anthropic and Aligning on Vision

Amodei co-founded Anthropic in 2021 alongside her older brother, Dario Amodei, and five other former OpenAI researchers, including Tom Brown, Jack Clark, Jared Kaplan, Sam McCandless, and Chris Olah. Today, the company behind the Claude AI models is valued at billions and stands as one of the leading artificial intelligence research firms globally, with massive expected revenue growth projected for the coming years.

A key element in Anthropic's success, according to Amodei, was the absolute alignment among the founders regarding the company's core mission and AI safety focus. She emphasized that founders must share the same mental model.

"If you lock yourself and your co-founder in a room, and write or draw a picture of what you are trying to build, you shouldn't walk out of the room where one drew a unicorn and the other drew a platypus. That is exactly the kind of situation where you might think you are doing the same thing, but it does not end well."

A Unique Leadership Profile

Unlike stereotypical tech moguls, Amodei’s background is unconventional. She holds a bachelor's degree in English literature from the University of California, where she studied on a flute scholarship, and started her career in political communications before transitioning to Stripe and later OpenAI. Observers often describe her as the operational foundation that complements her brother's visionary approach, combining high emotional intelligence with rigorous strategic execution.
