Land Registration Error in Iksal Leads to Million-Shekel Extortion Indictment
A land registration error in Iksal led to a million-shekel extortion attempt by a criminal organization, prompting indictments against three suspects after violent threats and grenade attacks.
A bureaucratic error over a land parcel in the northern town of Iksal, near Nazareth, escalated into severe threats and an extortion attempt amounting to one million shekels. Following an investigation by the Northern District Police, the Northern District Prosecutor's Office is filing an indictment today at the Nazareth-Nof HaGalil Magistrate's Court against three northern residents, aged 32, 36, and 50, from Iksal and Nazareth.
The case began when police received reports of threats directed at a local resident and his family. According to the investigation, after a bureaucratic mistake resulted in a land plot being registered under the victim's name instead of the rightful claimant, the suspect turned to a criminal organization for "assistance."
The suspects demanded financial "compensation" and summoned the victim to a meeting to arrange the payment. When he refused to cooperate, a campaign of harassment ensued, including the throwing of grenades at his home and the homes of his relatives, alongside threatening phone calls.
In a recorded phone call released by the police, one of the extortionists issued an ultimatum and detailed the escalating cost if the victim failed to submit: "Now, instead of paying 700, you have to pay a million... If you don't pay, you'll lose one, two, three, and you'll still pay two million instead of one... You have until tomorrow afternoon. If you don't give an answer... first your children and then you."
Following the police investigation, the three suspects involved in the extortion campaign were arrested.
