Three years after the October 7 massacre, the IDF announced today (Thursday) that it will launch a process to review the awarding of citations and medals to soldiers who demonstrated heroism and sacrifice in the battles in the Gaza envelope.

The process will begin with a commanders' conference next Wednesday, October 14, presenting the framework for evaluating acts of bravery during the Hamas onslaught. The conference will be led by Head of the Manpower Directorate, Maj. Gen. Dado Bar-Kefor, and the President of the Military Court of Appeals, Maj. Gen. Orly Markman. Commanders from all brigades and sectors of the IDF will participate.

According to the IDF Spokesperson's Unit, the goal is to officially recognize exceptional acts of valor performed by IDF personnel during the battles and to preserve the combat legacy for future generations. The military emphasized that the review will be conducted with strict adherence to factual accuracy, sensitivity, and transparency.

Ahead of the process, bereaved families were updated on its existence, goals, and significance. Following the commanders' conference, the IDF is expected to release further details on the execution of the review and its central stages.

Alongside the review of soldiers' heroism, the IDF will also address acts of bravery by civilians who acted during the October 7 attack. Appropriate cases will be forwarded to the advisory committee to the President of the State, which evaluates the granting of the "President's Medal for Civilian Bravery".
