Former Houthi spokesman Ali al-Bukhaiti stated in a special interview that Houthi control over Bab el-Mandeb effectively grants Iran dominion over yet another vital strait. According to al-Bukhaiti, Iran and the Houthis can thus choke the global economy and pressure the administration of Donald Trump until reaching an arrangement likely favoring Tehran and its proxies.
The Houthis could not have seized the strait the way they did without direct Iranian support, said a senior Yemeni commentator known as 'H'.
Strategic Implications for Israel and Saudi Arabia
Military support from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), experts stationed in Sana'a, and assistance with missile launches and tactical planning have enabled the Houthis to threaten maritime traffic and impose a naval blockade. Yemeni sources emphasize that this strategic development spells bad news for the global economy and threatens regional stability.
Al-Bukhaiti added that dominating the strait boosts Houthi leverage against Israel and facilitates the influx of foreign weapons from China, Russia, and other actors. Furthermore, the group intends to impose transit tolls on commercial vessels crossing the strait, securing massive revenues to fund future military capabilities.
