President Isaac Herzog Defends Supreme Court Role on Party Disqualifications
President Isaac Herzog clashed with Channel 14 anchor Magdi Tabibi over Ra'am party participation, stating that Knesset disqualifications are decided by the Supreme Court.
President Isaac Herzog defended the constitutional framework regarding political party disqualifications during a recent interview with Channel 14. The discussion touched upon sensitive domestic matters, including the upcoming elections and Mansour Abbas's Ra'am party.
The Interview Clash
Anchor Magdi Tabibi pressed the president on whether a party whose leadership declines to explicitly condemn organizations like Hamas and Hezbollah should be permitted to run for the Knesset. Herzog declined to offer a personal condemnation, stating that the matter rests with the Supreme Court.
"This party has been running for many years and I am not the one who decides, the Supreme Court decided. By the way, as you know, the entire political system, from all directions, talks with them in the Knesset," Herzog stated.
Constitutional Boundaries
When pressed further on whether he personally believes such factions are fit for the legislature, Herzog expressed impatience, emphasizing that legal determinations belong to the judicial branch and warning against narrowing the national discourse to specific political figures.
