An intruder who breached the private property of former US Vice President Kamala Harris in Malibu, California, was detained by security personnel on Friday night before reaching the residence. According to Politico, Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff, were not present at the property during the incident.
A spokesperson for Harris, Eduardo Negron, stated that security personnel identified the suspect after he entered the private grounds and apprehended him before he could approach the house. "Last night, security personnel detained an individual who unlawfully entered the property of Vice President Harris and Doug Emhoff before he could reach the house," he said. He added that the couple was not at the location and thanked the security detail and law enforcement for their swift response.
Law Enforcement Response and Security Concerns
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department reported that deputies from the Malibu Lost Hills station were dispatched to the scene at around 10:30 PM on Friday following a report of a suspicious person. Upon arrival, the suspect had already been located by private security personnel and was found outside the property boundary. Local police stated that officers warned the man and ordered him to leave the area. He complied and left voluntarily without further incident. Following the incident, the Sheriff's Department decided to step up police patrols in the area as a precautionary measure.
Harris purchased the Malibu beach house in December for approximately $8.15 million. The purchase sparked speculation in the United States regarding her future political plans, partly due to the property's location in an exclusive, private area populated by celebrities. The incident is also expected to refocus attention on Harris's security arrangements, after former President Joe Biden extended her federal protection beyond the standard six-month period typically provided to former vice presidents. However, President Donald Trump terminated this federal protection last summer, prompting California Governor Gavin Newsom to announce that the California Highway Patrol would assume responsibility for her security.
