A 54-year-old Greek woman has given birth to a baby girl using an embryo frozen for 22 years, just months after the tragic death of her 21-year-old son in a car accident.
A Race Against Time
Christina Rapfti-Tselpi and her 60-year-old husband, Konstantinos Raptis, made the courageous decision to try for another child following the loss of their son Georgios in October. The couple faced a strict legal deadline due to Greece's age limit of 54 for in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments, requiring special approval from national authorities.
"I had a window of opportunity of just two and a half months," Rapfti-Tselpi said. "It was stressful, but with inner strength and support from our doctor and his entire team, we overcame every obstacle."
Rapfti-Tselpi gave birth in Athens to a baby girl weighing 3.49 kilograms. The couple named her Georgia, after their late son.
Giving Life a Second Chance
"We decided to give life a second chance, to make a new beginning, bring new life into our home, and continue the story of our family," she expressed.
The embryo used had been frozen for over 22 years. Dr. Konstantinos Pantos, the couple's gynecologist, noted that Greece's age restrictions on fertility treatments require re-evaluation, especially amid declining birth rates.
