Gordon Companies Inc., the retail firm behind the major Christmas decoration and equipment brand, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in a New York court.

Founded in 1977 with the physical store Dave’s Christmas Wonderland in Buffalo and expanding into e-commerce in 2001, the company reported heavy liabilities estimated between $10 million and $50 million.

The firm operates several leading retail websites and brands, including Christmas Central, the e-commerce site Christmas.com, the artificial tree brand Northlight, and Pool Central.

According to court filings, the company has between 200 and 999 creditors, with international shipping giant FedEx listed among its largest unsecured creditors.

Its collapse highlights the severe challenges faced by retailers relying almost exclusively on concentrated seasonal sales.

Retail experts point out that this is a high-risk model requiring companies to purchase inventory in advance and pay for expensive shipping and storage for months, while revenues arrive within a narrow window of just a few weeks.

Despite the legal proceedings, the company’s websites continue to operate normally and accept orders as management works out a restructuring plan.
