British Adventurer Returns Home After Walking 50,000 Kilometers Since 1998
British adventurer Karl Bushby returned to the United Kingdom after walking over 50,000 kilometers across 29 countries since 1998, completing his journey with a grueling swim across the English Channel.

Karl Bushby returned to the United Kingdom on October 5, 2026, completing a grueling maritime crossing of the English Channel as part of his unprecedented Goliath Expedition. Setting out from Punta Arenas, Chile, on November 1, 1998, the former British paratrooper has spent nearly three decades walking more than 50,000 kilometers across 29 countries without using any mechanized transport for forward progress.
The Final Maritime Obstacle
Facing a refusal from authorities to let him walk through the Channel Tunnel, Bushby secured special permission from British and French officials to swim the English Channel. Equipped with a wetsuit and a support team, he spent roughly 20 hours in the water over three days, battling severe muscle cramps before landing at Shakespeare Beach near Dover. His arrival was witnessed by family, friends, and documentary filmmaker Werner Herzog.
"I had severe muscle cramps just one hour into the swim, but stopping was never an option," Bushby told the BBC upon his arrival.
Decades of Extreme Challenges
Throughout his 28-year journey, Bushby faced numerous life-threatening obstacles. He navigated the perilous Darien Gap between Colombia and Panama, where he used newspaper clippings to convince armed militants of his peaceful intentions. In 2006, he walked across the frozen Bering Strait from Alaska to Russia, surviving a tense encounter with a polar bear. His trek was also delayed by Russian visa disputes, a brief detention for alleged espionage, the 2008 global financial crisis, and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Although he is now back on British soil, Bushby's expedition is not yet officially finished. He still has approximately 400 kilometers left to walk to his mother's home in Hull, a final leg he hopes to complete by November to mark the exact 28th anniversary of his departure.
