The manager suffered his first defeat in the role as Germany was stunned 1:0 by Greece in Augsburg during the UEFA Nations League. This marked the very first time Germany has ever lost to Greece. The hosts controlled the match for long stretches, holding 77% possession in the first half according to Opta data, but struggled to create meaningful chances.
Klopp made five changes to the starting lineup compared to the 1:1 draw against the Netherlands in his debut on Thursday, yet the team struggled to find a way to the goal.
"This is part of the process, absolutely," Klopp said after the match. "The lineup, the formation, the many changes – everything was 100% my responsibility."
The Decisive Moment and Post-Match Reactions
In the 74th minute came the moment that stunned the stadium. Substitute Dimitrios Kourbelis received the ball and fired toward the goal. The ball deflected off a German defender, changing direction and deceiving the goalkeeper to secure a surprising 1:0 lead.
"That's football," Klopp said. "To end the game in a draw? I would have jumped at that easily. But to lose – that's hard. I don't think we deserved to lose, but it happened."
Defender Jonathan Tah did not try to sugarcoat things after the final whistle either.
"To be honest, we just didn't play well enough," the center-back admitted. "Of course, we are disappointed and angry when we lose a game. But the important thing is that we stick together."
Looking Ahead and External Criticism
Tah also addressed the atmosphere surrounding Klopp's appointment and the immense enthusiasm sparked by his arrival: "That won't change, the euphoria surrounding the new manager. If we don't play well and lose, naturally not everyone will be happy. But we can fix this in the next game."
Klopp himself indicated that he has no intention of abandoning rotation. "We will change the squad, we will change the team," he said. "The good thing is that the opponent doesn't necessarily know how we will play, but right now we don't exactly know how we will play either, because we need to reconnect this team."
Former Bayern Munich and Germany star Bastian Schweinsteiger did not hold back his criticism following the defeat to Greece, declaring: "Allow me to reiterate, we are no longer a top-tier team. We have reached mediocrity. We no longer have those players who make the difference."
Alongside his critique, Schweinsteiger made it clear that he understands Klopp's approach and his desire to test numerous players. Germany will attempt to recover on Thursday when they host Serbia in Munich.
