A giant VLCC oil tanker caught fire on Thursday in the Gulf of Oman, approximately 30 nautical miles east of Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates. This marks the second suspected tanker attack in the region within less than 12 hours amid escalating maritime threats.

Heightened Maritime Tensions

Maritime tracking reports identified the vessel as the Dhalkut, a massive ship measuring roughly 336 meters in length with a carrying capacity of approximately 300,000 tons. The tanker sails under the flag of the Marshall Islands and is linked to Omani shipping companies. A major fire erupted on board in an area serving as a vital shipping lane for tankers bypassing the Strait of Hormuz.

"At least 12 attacks, attempted attacks, or tanker harassment incidents were recorded between September 28 and October 5, the highest weekly total since the war began."

This incident occurred just hours after another tanker was struck by multiple projectiles roughly 51 nautical miles north of the Qatari coast. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations reported casualties in that attack, though detailed information remains scarce.

Market and Strategic Impact

Market analysts note that oil prices have responded sharply to the escalation, with Brent crude surging above 102 dollars per barrel. The primary concern is that the attacks are spreading outside the Strait of Hormuz toward Fujairah, a critical bypass route for Persian Gulf energy exports.
