From France to the IDF: Young Olim Complete Mechina and Enlist

Young French Jews have arrived in Israel from across France to begin a new life, leaving their families behind and enrolling in the Gor Arie mechina pre-military preparatory program, run by the Betar movement. Operating between Ashdod and Ashkelon, the program helps participants integrate through intense Hebrew ulpan studies, physical training, and navigation exercises. Despite the emotional challenges of separation from family and confronting a new culture, the participants express deep Zionist motivation and a firm commitment to draft into the IDF.
Journey from France to the IDF
The participants arrived with high hopes, driven in part by a desire to escape rising antisemitism in Europe and a yearning for a meaningful life in Israel. Simon Patussi, one of the instructors who made aliyah himself, explains that a French Jew ultimately seeks belonging in Israel. For many, seeing soldiers defend the country during the October 7 events served as a profound catalyst.
The reason I am doing the mechina is because I want to live in Israel. I cannot live here, be here, but not give to the country, says Leni, a participant from Paris.
Rigorous Training and Integration
While the young men train on the shores of Ashdod with physical conditioning and krav maga, the young women focus on language acquisition at the absorption center in Ashkelon. After months of intensive Hebrew studies, participants like Eva note they can now easily navigate daily life, from opening bank accounts to shopping independently.
The program culminates in a grueling 60-kilometer march from the Carmel forests to Jisr az-Zarqa, testing their physical and mental endurance. Supported by visiting parents and dedicated staff, the journey symbolizes their transformation into full members of Israeli society.
Closing the Circle at Tel HaShomer
The process reaches its emotional climax at the Tel HaShomer absorption base, where participants officially enlist in the IDF. Many will begin their service at the Havat HaShomer military base designed for new immigrants. Standing in uniform with kitbags in hand, the young olim conclude a transformative journey from apprehensive newcomers to dedicated defenders of their new home.
