A five-year-old autistic boy died in Florida after a heavy classroom display screen collapsed on him, prompting police and school district investigations.
A five-year-old autistic boy, Bellamy Dawkins-Morris, tragically died at Riviera Elementary School in Palm Bay, Florida, after a heavy classroom display screen collapsed on him.
The incident occurred around midday. School staff administered first aid and called emergency services. The child was rushed to Holmes Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigation and Safety Checks
Palm Bay Police launched a comprehensive investigation. Deputy Chief Nick Scchpansky stated that preliminary findings point to a tragic accident, but investigators are thoroughly examining the circumstances of the collapse.
The school district initiated an urgent safety review of all similar display screens manufactured by educational technology company Promethean. The fallen screen weighed approximately 54 kilograms. Promethean expressed deep sorrow and announced an independent investigation into how securely mounted equipment could detach.
"There are no words that can describe the magnitude of this loss," said Mark Rendell, superintendent of schools.
Family Questions Supervision
Family members raised difficult questions regarding the equipment's wall mounting and classroom supervision. They were told the child moved the screen back and forth moments before it fell.
